Case Study: Building BA Excellence in a Distributed Organization

Many business analysis experts debate whether business analysis professionals should be centralized in a common organization or distributed across teams to be integrated with the business areas that they support. In Pfizer’s Research & Development Business Technology organization, business analysts are distributed throughout the organization, with smaller groupings that are tightly tied to specific business lines and functions within Pfizer. To enable specialization in a business domain while still focusing on driving strong, targeted growth of the business analysis discipline, Pfizer created a Business Analysis Leadership Team in 2011. In this session Carol talks about the use of the Leadership Team approach at Pfizer and how it has helped improve the quality and success of business analysts in her organization. She also shares some of the challenges in establishing a strong, highly effective leadership team and her thoughts on how you can avoid some of them.
Learning Objectives:
  • Awareness on an approach to driving a discipline forward without centralization
  • How to build an effective leadership team
  • Challenges to overcome in establishing and maintaining a productive leadership team
