Welcome to the BA Café - How to Envision 'Business Analysis' as a Business

Peter Johnson, CBAP

This talk defines Business Analysis in business terms. Among other important questions, it examines who in the business can be considered a customer of business analysis, what relationship they want with those who provide it, and which services best meet their needs. The ‘BA Café’ is our metaphor for understanding the voice of the customer when it comes to business analysis.

The speaker will walk through a visual model – using the Business Model Canvas [Osterwalder, Pigneur] – for mapping the value of business analysis to nine key areas.

The interactive session will capture ideas from the audience as ‘sticky notes’ for each market segment. Different market segments (i.e., those who provide input to, or require output from business analysis like product managers and architects) take on the role of ‘personas’ representing business functions. They expect different customer relationships (i.e., pro-active or consultative) with those who practice business analysis. They gain value from different offers (i.e., deliverables using business analysis techniques like modeling, research, or feasibility studies).

The customer’s goal may be to make better decisions or improve their own customers’ customer experience. The BA helps them accomplish that and must stay relevant in a rapidly changing environment.

Three take-aways from this session are:

·         Learn how to use the Business Model Canvas

·         Shape your business analysis skills to meet your ‘customer’s’ expectation

·         Discuss examples of BA roles, career opportunities and value to the organization

This session will originate in a classroom with graduate students from Rutgers University Professional Science Masters Program. Members of the IIBA and other BAs from local enterprises are welcome to join on campus, or from additional remote venues to be announced.
